The Nightingale

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah is a gripping and beautifully written historical fictional novel that tells
the story of two sisters trying to survive in war torn France during WWII. The novel takes you on a
journey of highs and lows, love and loss, beauty and pain through the eyes and resilient spirit of France’s
unsung heroines.

I truly enjoyed Hannah’s riveting tale and had a hard time not wanting to stay up all night to keep
reading.

France, 1939 – In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn’t believe that the Nazis will invade France … but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne’s home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive.

Vianne’s sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can … completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others.

Happy Reading!

*I love to read, although I do not always have the time to sit down and dedicate time to enjoying a brilliant book like I would like to. For this reason, I am a huge fan of audible. While there is nothing quite like the feel of an actual book in your hands or even the smell of the pages, I have grown fond of audio books. After dropping my kids off at school, I will listen to a book while on my way to work and then again after work. Really it ends up being anytime I am in the car by myself I am listening to a book. This allows me to get through a book in 1-2 weeks. It is such a great option for those of us that have to multi-task just to get through our day!
